Determining properties of soft clay formations by CPTU testing

Igor Sokolić, Željana Skazlić, Antun Szavits-Nossan

Abstract

Principal properties of soft clay formations, and the way in which they were formed, are described. A particular emphasis is placed on the environment in which deposition has been taking place, and on processes that are taking place during the deposition. Using soft clay formations from Pelješac Bay as an example, the analysis of CPTU test results, and appropriate correlations, were used to determine mechanical and physical properties of soil. The values obtained were compared with those measured during laboratory testing and in situ investigations.
