Analysis and design of short reinforced-concrete columns

Ivan Tomičić

Abstract

The analysis and design of short columns, similar to that of tie beams for walls with openings, dominantly subjected to transverse forces, is presented in the paper. Historic studies of load behaviour of short columns, as used in development of the new analytic procedure, are described. In this new procedure, bi-diagonal steel-bar cages are used to ensure a sufficient bearing capacity and ductility under earthquake action, at which tolerable and easily remediable damage to concrete may be expected.
