Promenade wall repair and beach shaping in Baška on Krk island

Marinko Capić

Abstract

The condition of the so called Vela plaža (Great Beach) in Baška on the island of Krk prior to adoption of the final solution is described. Previous unsuccessful attempts to repair the seaside promenade retaining wall are presented. The author emphasizes significance of beach rehabilitation and the tourism-related advantages of this town. The solution involving a simple engineering method for retaining wall construction and beach shaping is presented in full detail. The solution is based on a small stone riprap breakwater which dissipates wave energy and prevents loss of sand that was placed along the beach.
