Wind action on bridges according to the European standard

Mehmed Čaušević, Ivica Špalj, Elvis Žic

Abstract

After a brief description of wind action on structures based on Eurocode 1, a more detailed account of wind action on bridges is given. Possible occurrences of turbulent action, and the notion of aerodynamic cross-sectional stability of bridges, are described. It is shown on practical examples how vertical oscillation amplitudes were reduced on Storebaelt and Osteroy bridges by installation of directional wings on both the exposed and unexposed parts of cross section. By means of this paper, the authors wish to draw the attention of designers to the phenomena of bridge aerodynamics.
