Analysis of effects of flood wave caused by large dam break

Luka Sopta, Siniša Družeta, Danko Holjević

Abstract

The analysis of consequences of a large dam break is presented. Problems relating to large dam failure, and selection of proper modelling solutions, are analyzed. Simulations of flood wave propagation are made using a numerical model, and Tribalj Dam is used as an example. Possible consequences in the flood zone are determined by analyzing water depth and flood wave velocity, using the Clausen-Clark criterion. The emphasis is placed on the need and significance of categorizing and ranking the extent and effects of flood waves caused by dam break.
