Analysis of mechanical properties of materials used in masonry buildings

Joško Krolo, Mladenko Rak

Abstract

Procedures and results obtained by testing principal mechanical properties of materials for masonry buildings made of brick and stone, are presented in the paper. The testing includes determination of shear strength, compressive strength and tensile strength for mortar, brick and stone, as well as determination of the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio for mortar and stone. Most of these investigations were conducted on structures categorized as protected cultural monuments, in the cities of Vukovar and Dubrovnik. The significance of these analyses for the preparation of appropriate rehabilitation design documents for masonry buildings is emphasized.
